On June 19, 1953, the first shovel of dirt was lifted to make way for a new hospital in Royal Oak. What was once the Sharp family farm, and land for a subdivision that was never built, is now a 1,070-bed academic, research and referral center that ranks among the top hospitals in the United States for inpatient admissions and surgeries.

In the 1940s, two area groups - the South Oakland Hospital Authority and a similar group in Birmingham/Bloomfield - formed committees to advocate for a hospital to support Detroit's growing northern suburbs. The two groups eventually merged into one incorporated as Oakland Hospital, and considered two locations: a site on Adams Road in Birmingham and one at Thirteen Mile and Woodward in Royal Oak. The 112-acre Royal Oak site was ultimately chosen.
During construction, a load of bricks was mistakenly delivered to Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn. As a result, the name of the new hospital was changed to William Beaumont Hospital, in honor of Fort Mackinac army surgeon, Dr. William Beaumont, a Michigan physician known for his pioneering research of the human digestive system.

When the new hospital opened in January 1955, nearly 20,000 people attended an open house to view the hospital billed as the most contemporary of its time.

By 1956, the hospital trustees decided that all efforts should be "directed to the development of a medical center, which shall be available to patients regardless of their place of residence."

In 1974, Beaumont broke ground for a second hospital: Beaumont Hospital, Troy (now Corewell »ÆÉ«²Ö¿â Beaumont Troy Hospital). Then a 200-bed community hospital, it now is a 458-bed, acute care community teaching hospital that ranks among the nation's highest-volume community hospitals for admissions and surgeries.
By 1980, the organization was heading for national recognition. Renowned physicians and researchers were recruited to Beaumont to build programs in urology, cardiology, orthopedics, pediatrics, oncology, transplant and more. In 1995, this resulted in Beaumont being named to U.S. News & World Report's list of America's Best Hospitals, an honor that's continued for 20 consecutive years. In 2007, Beaumont began advertising on with its long-running and successful Do you have a Beaumont doctor campaign, which has received multiple awards and defined the brand for over a decade.

Beaumont became a three-hospital system with the acquisition of Bon Secours Hospital in 2007, renamed Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe. With 250 beds, the Grosse Pointe hospital offers high- quality medical, surgical, emergency, obstetric and critical care services.

Today, Beaumont »ÆÉ«²Ö¿â System includes three hospitals, 54 community-based sites of care, nursing centers, home care services, hospice and The Beaumont Research Institute. Beaumont is the exclusive clinical teaching site for the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, founded by OU and Beaumont in 2007.
